Data methodology

World records

SwimWiki imports record-progression tables directly from Wikipedia through the MediaWiki API, normalizes event names, dates, courses, times, and record holders, and assigns stable SwimWiki record identifiers. The imported material is available under CC BY-SA 4.0.

American records

American progressions are merged from USA Swimming’s official 2021 Short Course, 2022 Long Course, and 2025 Long Course World Championships Media Guides. Older guides supply deeper historical tables while newer guides supply recent marks and richer meet names. Imports are rejected when event times are implausible, chronology moves backward, names contain locations, or existing coverage decreases. American records remain separate from U.S. Open and Americas records.

Verification

The importers preserve the published progression rather than inferring records from fastest times. Future revisions can attach governing-body evidence and correction history to individual SwimWiki IDs without changing the public URLs.
